Possible Causes of Osteoporosis

Posted by Ronald Redman on December 20, 2011 at 9:25 AM

Around 10 million Americans are affected by a major health problem called osteoporosis and over 34 million more are at risk. Men are also affected by this condition and not only women. In order to understand this condition better that can be helpful in terms of how to deal with it, different studies have been made. One of the most notable studies has been about prebiotics as osteoporosis prevention.

Purdue University performed a study about prebiotics and bone benefits through their Department of Foods and Nutrition. A discovery was made that ingesting prebiotic fiber can promote beneficial bacteria production in the gut. This can help prevent osteoporosis because it will give the body a heightened ability to absorb nutrients.

When bones start becoming thin and the bone mineral density decreases, osteoporosis is present. This is a problematic condition as it displays no symptoms not until a fracture happens. Many different reasons are attributed to why this kind of condition may occur such as:

Hormones. Women has estrogen as their primary sex hormone. One of its major functions is to maintain bone mineral density by decreasing bone resorption while improving bone formation. Women who are at their menopausal stage and who are at high risk of developing the disease can use this factor as a reason. As for men, the high risk of developing the disease falls among those who are dealing with hypogonadism in which they produce less or no sex hormones.

Vitamins and Minerals. Particularly vitamin D, calcium, and minerals are essential in keeping the bones healthy. Calcium contributes through ensuring that bones are strong and improving the level of one’s bone density. On the other hand, vitamin D works by aiding in the absorption and regulation of calcium throughout the body.

Lifestyle. An observation has been made among people who are excessive consumers of alcohol and they were found out to have lower bone density. Moreover, cigarettes are also known to contribute in rapid bone loss. On a different note, the effects of caffeine in vitamin D absorption and calcium excretion have been thought to contribute to bone breakdown.

Moreover, being one the move is vital in order for calcium to move in the body. High risks of osteoporosis are found among people who have sedentary lifestyle. Engaging in regular exercise can help a lot.

These factors can always be altered or changed. This is helpful because one can think of ways in order to stay away from the disease. People are likely to prefer the absence of the disease rather than use treatments like Fosamax, especially that it may lead to a Fosamax class action lawsuit.
